- Beryl Arbit is the only female participating in the 1986 ToC.
- Marvin Shinkman is the first to have made through the entire ToC round by not coming up with a single correct response in Final Jeopardy. He is also the first 4-time champion to reach the finals of the ToC.
- This is the first ToC where one participant advance to the finals as wildcard.
- Gary Palmer and Eric Schoeck are the first ToC participants to compete each other before in their original appearance.
- 5-time champion Barbara Lowe was excluded from the tournament completely due to being declared ineligible in regular-play for competing under an untrue identity and competing on another game show within the probationary period. 4-time champion Gary Palmer, the next eligible player, took her place.
- Gary is reported to have won $1,000 in a college series during the Art Fleming version of Jeopardy!
- Starting this season, the prize money for the 2nd and 3rd places has been changed to minimum $5,000 instead final 2-day total, the same amount as the semifinalists.
- In 2022, Barbara's airings were discovered by the National Archives of Game Show History and her airings were released. Those broadcasts are recorded in the J! Archive (#).
- Marvin Shinkman and Lionel Goldbart had known each other in 1953 when they attended Brooklyn College at the same time.
