Trivia[]
Contest Related[]
- Eligibility lasted from November 23, 2015 to November 3, 2017.
- This is the first and currently only ToC under the "sky's the limit rule" where every competitor won 5 or more games.
- In addition, the majority of competitors won more than 5 games (nine competitors).
- All participants earned more than $100,000 in prize money in regular games.
- All regular-play participants placed second in their last game.
- Starting with this season, the Tournament of Champions is presented by Consumer Cellular.
- At this ToC, all participants wore blue ribbons to commemorate Cindy Stowell, who died of cancer.
- For the second time since the 2014 ToC, there are multiple super-champions who participated in the ToC.
- This is the first and only 2-game total point affair in a ToC final in which nobody came up with correct response in Final Jeopardy.
- Two years later, the finalists of the ToC competition are Jeopardy! All-Star Games Wildcard Match, as part of a team, they played against themselves, Alan's team won and finished third.
- Both this ToC and the ones after were presented by Consumer Cellular.
- Starting this season, ToC winners will be awarded a separate championship belt.
Contestant Related[]
- 6-time champion Cindy Stowell passed away prior to the airing of her Jeopardy! appearance; she qualified for, and would have appeared in, this Tournament of Champions. The participating contestants wore dark blue ribbons (the color of colon cancer awareness) in Cindy's honor; Jason Sterlacci conceived of that most appropriate tribute.
- Seth Wilson, who won 12 games, became the first super-champion to not advance to the semifinals.
- Lilly and Jason are the first cases in ToC where players from other tournaments competed in the same quarterfinal[1].
- Buzzy is the only player to pull off a come from behind ToC win despite earning $0 in the first round in the first game of a ToC Final, and it is the case that 3rd place in the first round came from behind after Dave Abbott, the winner of the 1999 ToC.[2]
Reference[]
- ↑ There is also the case of Jessica and Sam in S39, but Second Chance is difficult to include because it has strong characteristics of revival.
- ↑ What's so great about this record is that even when it extends to the entire tournament, the only time to win for $0 in the first place is Meryl Federman, who won the 2007 Teen Tournament Summer Games.
