  • Eligibility lasted from September 12, 2022 and July 28, 2023 (first and last games of Season 39, respectively). The latter was Lucas Partridge's third game, he won and became eligible for the future ToC.
  • It was revealed on the Inside Jeopardy! podcast that Andy Tirrell (who previously ended Cris Pannullo's 21-game streak and was first runner-up in the S39 Champions Wilcard Tournament) served as the alternate for the 2024 TOC.
  • For the first time, there are 2 ToC participants from Canada.
  • As stated on Inside Jeopardy!, Celebrity Jeopardy! champion Ike Barinholtz will be competing in this ToC. This is the first ToC to have a Celebrity Jeopardy! contestant qualify[3].
  • Also stated on Inside Jeopardy!, the minimum to qualify for ToC has traditionally been 3 wins. While ambiguous, it's possible that some 3-time champions can advance on their own[4].
  • Also, the ToC entry requirement has been changed from at least 5 consecutive wins to 4 consecutive wins. It seems that it was changed because there were difficulties in selecting ToC personnel when only champions with 4 or more wins in a row were selected.
    • The three winners of Second Chance will be seeded into this tournament instead of the ToC, as stated on Inside Jeopardy!.
  • In this S39, a Champions' Wildcard Tournament will be organized in which champions with 1-3 wins in history will gather and compete. In other words, it can be seen as a 1–3 win version of the SC aired in 2022, and it can be seen as similar to the 2005 ultimate tournament.
  • On December 5, 2023, according to the producer, the three-time champions of S39 will also appear, and a total of 27 people will participate. As a result, it became the ToC with the largest number of champions with 3 consecutive wins or less (10 in total).
    • This was the first ToC in 16 years in which two or more regular 3-time champions participated.
  • In this ToC, 14 people have competed together in a regular game before:
    • Luigi → Emmett
    • David → Cris
    • Sean → Ray
    • Troy → Jake
    • Kevin → Hannah → Juveria and Ben Chan
    • Jared → Suresh

Contestant related[]

  • Sean McShane, like Dan McShane from S29, set the record for the second time a family has two ToC entries.
  • Justin will be the youngest Tournament of Champions competitor since the Teen champions stopped receiving invites to the ToC in 2001. He will also be the first person to play in a Tournament of Champions that was not alive during Ken Jennings’ original run.
  • Jake DeArruda is the second ToC qualifier ever to not come up with a single correct response in Final Jeopardy during his regular appearance.
  • Cris and Ray are Superchampions in history to not advance to the Semifinals, and the former is the first top-seed participant to not even advance to the Semifinals since Mehrun Etebari in 2007. Previous superchamps not reaching semifinals include Seth Wilson, Jonathan Fisher, and Ryan Long. He is also the first 20+ time champion not to advance to the Semifinals.
  • Suresh and Stephen are the contestants who were eliminated before FJ among the champions with 6 or more consecutive wins, following Drew Horwood, who participated in the 2014 ToC, and the latter, like Drew, has the longest winning streak.
  • Ike Barinholtz became the first celebrity and Primetime player to advance to the semifinals, and the second tournament winner to beat Superchamp at ToC, following Sam Buttrey. Also, like the previous ToC, two participants became ToCs that defeated the super champion before the finals.
  • Yogesh Raut became the second three-time champion after Michael Falk, and the first winner of less than four consecutive wins and the first winner of less than $100,000 in 14 years since Vijay Balse. Additionally, with his win, Illinois became the second region in history to produce a ToC winner, following California (3).
  • In Game 2 of The Finals, Troy Meyer set a non-James Holzhauer DD record of $21,800 (4th highest score).

Evaluation[]

Corresponding ToC[]

This ToC can be said to be similar to S22 overall. There are many differences in many ways, such as the Super Champion being completely defeated by a champion with 3 or 4 consecutive wins, the participation of many 3-game winning streak champions, and the victory of a 3-game winning streak champion.

In particular, not only the 3-time winning champions but also the SC champions performed well, and Emily Sand showed a good performance, being the only SC player to reach the semifinals.

The finals received good reviews, like Goat and the previous ToC, which were held in a best-of-seven format, and the reviews were good enough to be accepted no matter who won.

Through this, it was once again proven that winning streak and prize money are not the main factors that guarantee victory in other tournaments. In fact, there are frequent cases of winning by crushing a super champion through DD, and this time, Jared took all DD and defeated Cris, a strong contender for the championship, and even without going far, Ken was unable to escape being second in command to Brad for a while, etc. , showing once again that victory or defeat is determined by various factors[5].

This ToC also received good reviews overall, and it is expected that all finalists will do well in the future, and many viewers believe that Cris, who showed disappointing results, will also show a good performance in the next competition.

References[]

  1. Primetime Celebrity Jeopardy! contestants win $1,000,000 for the charity of their choice.
  2. He is a different person from the person with the same name in S35. #
  3. Although the Celebrity Jeopardy! winner's prize money is $1 million, it doesn't affect the bye seed, as winning streaks are prioritized over prize money. In fact, all of CJ's prize money is in the form of donations, so in reality, they only receive appearance fees and honor.
  4. S36's Emma Boettcher and S37's Steve Moulds appeared as pinch hitters.
  5. Of course, there are super champions who won ToC, such as James Holzhauer and Amy Schneider, but even those who were successful won the ToC finals after a fierce battle. Maintaining the top spot on Jeopardy is not an easy task.
