Chains of Love was a short-lived reality, yet bizarre dating series where one gutsy woman or man is chained to four members of the opposite sex. Based on the Dutch series Kjeder (Chains) (Keep in mind that this has nothing to do with the 1988 or 2011 songs by Erasure or Ryan Adams of the same names respectively).

Premise[]

This program featured five daring people taken to a home in Palos Verdes Estates, California and bounded together by a six-foot chain and kept less than 24 inches from each other during taping. This group consisted of a "Picker" and four members of the opposite sex, whom are potential suitors, referred to as "playmates". The "playmates" were selected for the show according to their answers to questions in an earlier interview matched the qualities the Picker sought in a suitor. They are linked by their hands and feet in the "Ritual Room" by the "locksmith", played by a muscular man in a suit and sunglasses. The chaining of the contestants was never shown on-screen. To find their true love, they must be stuck together for four days & nights straight while in front of television cameras and taken to complete day-to-day tasks, such as grocery shopping, preparing food and ice skating.

To start, the picker was given $10,000 to give to the "playmates" (though not necessarily divided up evenly) based on his/her personal preferences. As the show progressed, The Picker eliminates potential matches, who are then unchained by the locksmith. As each contestant leaves, the Picker can decide to give a portion of the money to them if (s)he chooses. When one contestant remains, the Picker can choose to split the remaining cash with them if they feel that a "love connection" has been formed or keep the money for themselves. The final contestant can refuse to be involved any further in a relationship.
