Fashion Star was a short-lived fashion designer competition reality series where contestants compete with each other to create the best clothes and are restricted in time, materials and theme.
Premise[]
This show features designers--who are unknown but may have their own collections--competing for a chance to have their creations bought. Each week, the contestants are given a challenge to design clothing with a certain look, feel and function. Working with their designated team, the mentors Jessica Simpson, Nicole Richie, and John Varvatos offer insight and advice to contestants as they design their creations, shop for materials and oversee the production of their garments. The culmination of their efforts comes with an exhilarating fashion show during which they display their work to the three buyers: Caprice Willard of Macy's, Terron E. Schaefer of Saks Fifth Avenue and Nicole M. Christie of H&M (season 1) / Erika DeSalvatore for Express (season 2). Each week they are restricted in time, materials and theme. Any designer whose clothes are not purchased that week is up for elimination from the show. Their designs are judged by the celebrity mentors who will save one unsold contestant each week. Then the three buyers choose which of the remaining unsold designers is sent home. At the end of the season, the three remaining contestants must create separate showcases of three garments for each retailer. Whoever meets the needs of the three retailers will be named "Fashion Star" and will receive a capsule collection worth $6 million within each store.
International Versions[]
An Arabic version aired on Dubai TV and Awaan but it did not reach the success as it was also abandoned and shortened.
Network Ten in Australia bought the right to the show and has also discussed creating their version of the series.
ProSieben in Germany had their version of the show also under the title Fashion Hero hosted by Claudia Schiffer but like the American version, it did not reach its success where it was shortened and abandoned as a result.
