  • Beryl Arbit the only female participating in the 1986 ToC.
  • Marvin Shinkman is the first to have made through the entire ToC round by not coming up with a single correct response in Final Jeopardy.
  • Gary Palmer and Eric Schoeck are the first ToC participants to compete each other before in their original appearance.
  • 5-time champion Barbara Lowe was excluded from the tournament completely due to being declared ineligible in regular-play for competing under an untrue identity and competing on another game show within the probationary period. 4-time champion Gary Palmer, the next eligible player, took her place.
  • Gary is reported to have won $1,000 in a college series during the Art Fleming version of Jeopardy!
  • Starting this season, the prize money for the 2nd and 3rd places has been changed to minimum $5,000 instead final 2-day total, the same amount as the semifinalists.
  • In 2022, Barbara's airings were discovered by the National Archives of Game Show History and her airings were released. Those broadcasts are recorded in the J! Archive (#).
