Michael won $500,000 appearing on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire on August 24, 1999 and August 25, 1999; in this initial run of episodes, his $500,000 prize made him the show's highest winner, until John Carpenter became the show's first top million-dollar prize winner on November 18, 1999 and November 19, 1999.
Michael's winnings would have made him the alternate for the alternate for the 1988 Tournament of Champions, but according to Michael via Bob Shore, Michael was not informed of, and did not attend, the tournament.
