"You're an NFL quarterback and the clock is running out. Call the right play and you're a hero for the next seven days. Throw an interception and sixty thousand people in the stands don't let you forget it. The rules are very simple; after you get hit by a charging 270-pound tackle, you have 30 seconds to get up off the ground, make a snap decision, and put the ball into play. Thirty seconds - decisions, decisions, decisions! That's the name of the game on Monday Night Quarterback, the strategy football game that challenges you to call the right play in an actual NFL football game. Tonight, Dick Martin and John Hadl of the San Diego Chargers will play against Peter Lawford and Myron Pottios of the Washington Redskins. Your host on Monday Night Quarterback, the former right guard on the Green Bay Packers Super Bowl Championship Team, Jerry Kramer!"

Monday Night Quarterback is an unsold football-themed sports game show.

Gameplay[]

Two teams of two, each consisting of a celebrity (in this case, Dick Martin and Peter Lawford) and a pro football player (in this case, John Hadl and Myron Pottios), played a game of calling football plays. The team "with the ball" (in control) was given a situation from an actual football game (see below), and host Kramer gave three possible plays. The team then tried to pick the play that actually happened. The clip in question was then played (home viewers saw the clips on a chroma-key screen made up to look like a football). Picking the correct play awarded the team 3 points and they kept control, but an incorrect play scored no points and control passed to the other team. However, if the correct play was a touchdown, the team scored 6 points and the opponents immediately took control.

The team with the most points won the game and $500 worth of football stuff donated to a boys' club in the winning football player's city. That team also came back the following week to face new challengers (in this case, a team of Dustin Hoffman and Johnny Unitas was plugged).

Trivia[]

  • Jerry Kramer played for the Green Bay Packers from 1958-68, and was retired at the time of this pilot. He won back-to-back Super Bowl championships with the Packers in 1967 and 1968 (the very first Super Bowls in football history).
  • The football footage used during the game is from two St. Louis Cardinals matches: September 27, 1970 (against the Washington Redskins) and October 25, 1970 (against the New York Giants).
  • GSN aired this pilot twice: as part of "Super Games Sunday", and as part of a "Game Show Turkeys" marathon.
  • This is one of the few Bob Stewart game shows that had nothing to do with words.
