This is the 1986 section of the Press Your Luck episode guide. 1986 was when Press Your Luck's ratings began to decline, after CBS moved the show to the 4:00 PM ET/3:00 PM CT/MT/PT "death slot", replacing Body Language. Card Sharks took over Press Your Luck's former 10:30 AM ET/9:30 CT/MT/PT time slot on January 6, 1986.

Although there were some great moments in 1986 (including a $33,000+ win after getting three whammies in Round 1, and Annemarie Carrera becoming the second-highest winner behind Michael Larson), the loss of affiliates was too much for the show to bear; according to Broadcasting Magazine on July 14, 1986, by the end of the second quarter of the year in June, the program had ranked 25th out of 26 daytime shows with a 2.3/10 rating share. By the summer, more and more affiliates dropped the show to air syndicated programming.

The 1985 College Week aired from July 28-August 1 and then four weeks of reruns from Summer 1984 (including the heavily edited Randi/Lori/Cathy episode) aired from August 4-August 29. CBS's decision to cancel the show was finalized in August 1986, and the final four weeks of first-run episodes started airing on September 2, 1986; Broadcasting Magazine reported on August 18 that the program's live clearances had dwindled to 9%, and, projecting that the total clearance level would dwindle from 47% to 43%, decided to surrender the time period. Press Your Luck aired on CBS in daytime for the last time on September 26, 1986, thus prompting CBS to surrender the 4:00 PM ET/3:00 PM CT/MT/PT slot to the local affiliates to air syndicated programming as of September 29. Strike it Rich with Joe Garagiola replaced Press Your Luck in both Philadelphia and New York City.

CBS was the third and final network to throw in the towel with the 4:00 p.m. timeslot; ABC already did this on December 28, 1984 with the end of The Edge of Night, and NBC threw in theirs on December 2, 1977 when The Gong Show moved to 12:30 p.m.

Between December 1986 and September 1987, some local stations (some of which were CBS stations that did not air the show when it was in production) aired reruns of the show in syndication. And on September 14, 1987, the USA Network picked up reruns of the show.

The finale supposedly aired on September 26, 1986, but this episode guide only goes as far as July 25, 1986, since that was as far as USA Network reran the series, and is also the latest episode seen in repeats overall. If GSN or Buzzr acquires the final months of the series someday, the missing gaps will be filled in for any remaining episodes from #697 to #754.

NOTE: Press Your Luck did not air on January 1 due to the Cotton Bowl Parade coverage.
