Opening Spiels[]
Original[]
Pilot: "These three players have been especially selected today to play television's richest game. Jack Campion is a lawyer who always plays to win. Maggie Brown says she never even thinks about losing. And Matt Dorf tells us he thinks the guy who says 'winning isn't everything' is crazy. But only one of them can play and win today, as they play television's most exciting and challenging new game, PRESS YOUR LUCK! And now, here's your host, the star of Press Your Luck, PETER TOMARKEN!"
Early Episodes: "These three contestants are about to play the most exciting game of their lives, (which only one of them can win)! (introduction of each player, his/her hometown, and a small info bit on how just competitive s/he is going to be)
Best Remembered: (clips of contestants playing the game from past episodes, usually ending with who won the game) "Today/Tonight, these three players/college students are after high stakes/big bucks, but they'll have to avoid the Whammy, as they play the most exciting game of their lives!
- NOTES: When first used on November 7, 1983, Rod Roddy's opening spiel used "big bucks". This would be latter changed to "high stakes" as of November 16, 1983. From December 5-16, 1983, the opening spiel would be altered to replace "are after high stakes" with "will compete for high stakes". As of December 19, 1983, the opening spiel would revert back to "are after high stakes" and would be used until sometime in February 1985, at which point the opening spiel would replace "high stakes" with "big bucks" and would be used for the remainder of the series. On "college week" from July 28 until August 29, 1985, the word "players" is replaced with "college students". In the Gameshow Marathon version, hosted by former talk show host/actress Ricki Lake, announced by Rich Fields and featured former Whammy: The All-New Press Your Luck host Todd Newton as "prize deliverer" from 2006. The "big bucks" spiel was still in tact, however, the words "today" was never used while "CBS" was added and "your host" replaces "the star of PRESS YOUR LUCK" in the spiel. In the ABC version, the "big bucks" spiel was also still used. However, since season 1 in 2019, the words "tonight" replaces "today" as "your" and "star" are replaced with "the" in the spiel. In season 3, the taping location "briefly" moved from "Television City" to "Studio Center" in 2021. In 2022, for season 4, a few changes have been made as the taping location returned back from "Studio Center" to "Television City" along with the return of a full studio audience after the coronavirus/pandemic/COVID-19 outbreak. In 2023, for season 5, the taping location of the show moved again from "Television City" to "Haven Studios", "Neil Ross" gets replaced by "Chris Ahearn" as the new announcer and has a new square on "The Big Board" called "The Big 40" (or as Banks would call it "The Big 4-0") in celebration of the series' 40th anniversary.

Host Intros[]
"Hello, everybody. Thank you, Gary Kroeger! And hello to you, folks at home. Welcome (once again) to Whammy: The All New Press Your Luck, where you can spin your way to big bucks and some great prizes. Right now, let's meet today's players." - Season 1 Introduction
"NEWTON: "Thank you Gary Kroeger, hi everybody, good to see ya, and hello to you guys at home. Welcome to Whammy!, where you can spin your way to big bucks, and some great prizes. Hello players, it's great to have all of you here. Got a question for you, are you ready to Press Your Luck?"
CONTESTANTS: "Yes/Yeah!"
NEWTON: "We're gonna start things off by giving one of you $1,000. And you can add to your total by taking a chance on the/our big game board right up there. It is loaded down with hundreds of thousands of dollars in cash and prizes...
(...including this GEM Car. What you need to do is land on the GEM space in Round 1, and the CAR space in the final round, then you need to win the game, and then you need to win the game and you can drive it on out of here.) Each time you spin, you can add to your total by landing on a square that contains a cash value or a prize, and I'll show you how it works. Ready... stop! (Board stops on a prize and Todd describes it and how much it's worth) But, you have to be careful of the/that dreaded Whammy. (Board stops on Whammy, light turns red) Land on that Whammy, and he'll come out here and take all your cash, all your prizes, and knock you right out of this first round. The strategy in this first round is to take as many spins as you dare to take without hitting the Whammy. You can freeze at any point if you think you're afraid of the Whammy or you think you've got enough to win the round. The player in the lead at the end of this first round has a big advantage in the final round, and the player in the lead at the end of the game is our winner, and is the only one that gets to keep all the cash and prizes they've earned." - Season 1 description of Round 1
But, you have to be careful of the dreaded "whammy." The whammy will come out here and take all of your cash, all your prizes, and put'em right/down there into the/his own Big Bank, and speaking of the Big Bank, let's go ahead and put $3,000 in the Big Bank. And I wanna remind you that you can whammy the Whammy by hitting on the Big Bank square right up there. (Board stops on Big Bank) If you do that, I will ask you a question, simply answer it correctly, and you've got everything that's in the Big Bank. And on top of this, you can win a car. Gary?" - Season 2 description of Round 1
KROEGER: "It is the Sporty Suzuki Aerio SX with 145 horsepower, in dash, 6-disc CD changer, aluminum alloy wheels. From Suzuki."
NEWTON: "All you have to do is get both halves of the car key that you see on the big board, and you can drive out of here in style. And the player that's in the lead at the end of this first round gets to go last in the final round."

Question Round[]
“I'm gonna ask you questions and your correct answers will earn you spins at the big Press Your Luck game board. The more spins you have, the more money you can win, because our board is loaded with thousands of dollars in cash and fabulous prizes, and every time you stop the board like this—STOP!—you'll add money to your total as I just did when I added $750 to mine, unless, of course, you hit a Whammy. If you do that, that little devil (or rascal) comes out, and takes back everything you've won so you want to be very careful. The player with the highest total at the end of the game gets to keep it all, and returns tomorrow, and do it all over again. Are you all ready to Press Your Luck?” - Peter Tomarken (Pilot)
“I have four questions, and your correct answers will earn you spins at the big Press Your Luck game board. The more spins you have, the more money you can win, because our board is loaded with thousands of dollars in cash and fabulous prizes, and every time you stop the board like this—STOP!—you'll make money (insert amount). However, you have a chance as it were to hit a Whammy, and if you do that, he (random facts) and takes away all your money. So, you want to be very careful. The player with the most money at the end of the game gets to keep it all and return to play tomorrow. Are you all ready to Press Your Luck?” - Peter Tomarken (Rule explanation, episodes 1-75)
“I have four questions, and your correct answers will earn you spins at the big Press Your Luck game board. A correct buzz-in answer gives you three spins, a correct multiple choice answer gives you one spin. The more spins you have, the more money you can win, because our board has thousands of dollars in cash and fabulous prizes, and every time you stop the board like this—STOP!—you'll make money: (insert amount). On occasion, you can hit a Whammy, and if you hit a Whammy, he'll take away all your money, so be very careful.” - Peter Tomarken (Full rule explanation from Episode 76 onward. This rule explanation was used when new stations joined Press Your Luck.)
"Tonight, you will be taking on the Big Board. It is loaded with cash and prizes, and every time you stop the board like this—STOP!—you'll add money to your bank, just like that. The player with the most money at the end of round 2 gets to keep it and goes on to our bonus game, for a shot at $1,000,000! Are you all ready to Press Your Luck?" - Elizabeth Banks (Rule explanation, revival)
Question Round[]
"You give me a buzz-in answer, three spins, and a multiple choice answer, one spin. And you know what's on that big board." - Peter Tomarken (Partial rule explanation from mid-1984 onward.)
"Alright, well, first things first, let's earn some spins. I have three questions for this round. Here we go". - Elizabeth Banks (at the start of the first Question Round)
"It's time for round 2. I've got four questions so you can win more". - Elizabeth Banks (at the start of the second Question Round)
"I have four more questions, and that means four more chances to earn some mighty big spins. Remember, the more spins you have, the more money you can win at that big board. And the player with the most money at the end of the game gets to keep it all, and return to play tomorrow". - Peter Tomarken (at the start of the second Question Round in the first few weeks)
"I have four more questions, and the answers will become spins, and in this round each spin could be as much as $5,000". - Peter Tomarken (at the start of the second Question Round)
"Believe it or not, I have dollars in my hand. (holds up question cards, as everyone is confused) Yes, these *are* dollars. They're actually questions, for which correct answers produce spins; and in this round, a spin could be as much as $5,000." - Peter Tomarken (at the start of the second Question Round)
"Gang, do you want to know what I have in my hand here? (holds up question cards) I have dollars in my hand here. (everyone's confused) You wanna know why they are dollars? Because, they are actually questions, and your correct answers will earn you spins. In this round, a spin can be worth as much as $5,000". - Peter Tomarken (at the start of the second Question Round)
"If (insert contestant) gets it right, he'll/she'll pick up three spins. I'm going to give (insert contestant)'s answer and two others to (insert the other two contestants names). If they’re right, they'll pick up a spin apiece". - Peter Tomarken
"If you are right, you'll pick up three spins. I'll present your answer along with two others to your opponents and if they choose the correct answer, they'll each earn one spin". - Elizabeth Banks
"(Buzzer sounds). (Nobody knows/rings/buzzes in?) I'll give to you in multiple choice. If you get it right, you'll pick up a spin". - Host (if nobody buzzes in during the Question Round)
"(Buzzer sounds). You didn't get an answer after you buzzed in, so you're locked out for now. I'll give it to (insert two opponents) in multiple choice. If they get it right, they'll pick up a spin apiece". - Peter Tomarken (if a player buzzes in and didn't get an answer during the Question Round)
"Is the correct answer/it (insert answer), (insert answer) or (insert answer)?" - Host
"(contestant) gets a spin". - Host
"(contestant) gets three (big) spins". - Host
"(contestant) goes to/stays at (insert number)". - Host
"You're all wrong! The (correct) answer is (insert correct answer). No spins". - Peter Tomarken (when all three contestants answered incorrectly during the Question Round.)
"Last chance to win spins to take to the big board". - Elizabeth Banks
"You all will have a chance to turn/convert those spins into (big (Press Your Luck)) dollars/bucks, so stay with us, we'll be back". - Peter Tomarken (at the start of the commercial break after the First Question Round.)
"That's the last question. These players are taking those spins to the (Big (Press Your Luck) (Game)) Board to decide who's gonna walk away with all the bucks, so come on back". - Peter Tomarken (at the start of the commercial break after the Second Question Round.)
"We're gonna take these spins and turn them into cash, because it's time to take on the big board! HERE WE GO!" - Elizabeth Banks (heading to the Big Board in the ABC version)
Big Board Round[]
"All right, players, as you can see there are prizes, surprises, and over $13,000 in cash, and of course a few Whammies up there. Now each time you spin you have a chance to add anywhere from $100-$1,250 to your total, and you'll notice that our board is constantly changing. Now we're gonna find out just how courageous you are, just how much confidence you have, because if you don't want to press your luck, you can pass your remaining spins to another player at anytime during your turn and protect your money that way. Remember that it's always possible that the next spin could be a Whammy, and if you hit him and lose it all, you go back to zero; so everything's at stake each time you spin. And if you pick up four Whammies, you're out of the game. History... Gone... Bye-Bye". - Peter Tomarken at the start of Round 1 of the Big Board in the pilot
"All right, now players, we weren't kidding when we said earlier that the sky's the limit on Press Your Luck because as you can see the value of the board has changed dramatically. Not only the prizes are even more fabulous, but there's over $50,000 in cash up there waiting to be won. Now in any single spin you can pick up anywhere from $500-$5,000. But let me caution you that the one thing that hasn't changed is the proverbial Whammy. So, you want to be very careful. Let's take a look at the money totals and some other totals. We've Jack with no dollars, two Whammies, eight spins. We've got Maggie with $2,371 and no Whammies, three spins. We've Matt with no dollars, two Whammies and five spins". - Peter Tomarken at the start of Round 2 of the Big Board in the pilot
"All right, players, as you can see, there are prizes, surprises, and over $13,000 in cash, and of course a few Whammies up there, on that game board. So, each time you spin, you have a chance to add anywhere from $100-$1,250 to your total, and you'll notice that our board is constantly changing. So, if you feel a Whammy coming on, and you don't want to press your luck, all you have to do is pass your remaining spins to another player during your turn, and protect your money that way. Remember, everything's at stake each time you spin, and four Whammies will put you out of the game". - Peter Tomarken at the start of Round 1 of the Big Board in the first few weeks
"Thank you, and now players, we weren't kidding when we said earlier that you can win a bundle on Press Your Luck, because, as you can see, the value of that board has changed dramatically. Not only are the prizes even more fabulous, but there's over $50,000 in cash up there just waiting to be won. Now, in any single spin you can pick up as much as $5,000. But let me caution you, that the one thing that hasn't changed is the proverbial Whammy. He is still lurking in the bushes, waiting to take all your money. And speaking of money... (insert scores)". - Peter Tomarken at the start of Round 2 of the Big Board in the first few weeks
"All right, players, you have earned the right to hit the Board. The Big Board has $13,000, also some prizes, surprises and a few Whammies, so (beware and) avoid the Whammies. Remember, each spin can bring you up to $1,500. And that's important, because the player that ends this round with most money gets to play last in the Final Round, that's a big advantage. Remember, you can pass your spins at anytime during your turn if you have a fear of the Whammy, and four Whammies will put you out of the game". - Peter Tomarken at the start of Round 1 of the Big Board (when $1,500 became the new top value)
"Welcome back to Whammy! The All New Press Your Luck. Time now for the final round. Players, look at our big game board, as you can see we have over $100,000 in cash and prizes. And also some whammies up there. Land on one and he takes all your cash, all your prizes, and leave you flat broke, and if you hit four of those whammies, you will be eliminated from the game /you're out of the game, so be careful (insert name), you have (insert number of whammies). Now, as that weren't enough, the big Board now features double whammies. Hit a Double Whammy and not only will he come out and take all your cash and prizes, he will mess around with you a little. And there's more strategy in our final round, as you can pass your remaining spins to the player with the next highest total. And the player that's in the lead is our champion, and they'll keep the prizes and cash that they already won." - Todd Newton (at the Final Round of Whammy! The All New Press Your Luck - Season 1)
"Welcome back to the final round of Whammy. Players, look up there on our big board. Over $100,000 in cash and prizes, but there are some whammies and even some double whammies ready to grab everything and put in down there in the Big Bank which is now at (insert last Big Bank total.) If you hit 4 whammies, you will be eliminated from the game/out of the game. But, if you hit Big Bank and get the question right, you have whammied the Whammy. Only the player that's in the lead at the end of this game gets to keep all their cash and their prizes, and here in the final round, you can pass your spins. Don't forget that. (insert player's name), you will be going first. You have (insert money), and (insert number) spins. Are you ready to go? (Contestant): Ready. Todd: Let's put the big board in motion and see what we can do!" - Todd Newton (in the Final Round of Whammy! - Season 2)
"All right players, it's time for Big Bucks. We've got $50,000/$80,000/$100,000 at stake, one/some prize(s) worth more than $5,000 and also some Whammies, so avoid that/be careful". - Peter Tomarken at the start of Round 2 of the Big Board in later episodes of the '80s version
"We've got thousands of dollars and some wild prizes on that big board tonight, but beware of the Whammy (Whammy Foghorn). Land on one, he'll take away all your cash and prizes, and if you rack up four Whammies, you're out of the game. The player who ends the round with the most money gets to go last in round 2, so you'll know exactly where you stand when you go to play. It's a big advantage. Let's get to the game. We start with the player with the fewest spins, and that's (insert player here). Take it away!" - Elizabeth Banks at the start of Round 1 of the Big Board
"It's round two, so we're doubling the big bucks to $10,000! And remember, whoever has the biggest bank at the end of this round gets to keep all their cash and prizes and moves on to our bonus game for a shot at $1 million! We start with the player with the least amount of money, and that's (insert player here). Good luck!" - Elizabeth Banks at the start of Round 2 of the Big Board
"We have a very special space on the board this season. It's called "The Big 40". It's helping us celebrate 40 years, since Press Your Luck first premiered in 1983. Now, if you land on that square, you'll win 40 of... something. Something amazing, I promise." - Elizabeth Banks talking about "The Big 40" space in round 2 of the Big Board
"Are you ready to Press Your Luck?" - Host
"Big Bucks, No Whammies, STOP!" - Contestant
"Big Bucks, and NO WHAAAAAAAAAAAAMMMIEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSS!!! STOP!" - Steve Bryant (upon a prolonged catchphrase in July 1985)
"Stop at (insert amount/prize/trip). That prize/trip is worth (insert amount)". - Peter Tomarken
"Stop at (insert money) (and a spin)". - Peter Tomarken
"Stop at Big Bucks... (insert amount) and a spin!"- Peter Tomarken
"Stop at a Whammy". - Peter Tomarken
"Stop at BIG BANK". - Todd Newton Season 2
"(insert amount) dollars, (insert number) spins. (What's your pleasure?) Press Your Luck or Pass?" - Peter Tomarken
"You have one Whammy, and (x) spins. Do you want to start again?" - Peter Tomarken
"You're back in the chips." - Peter Tomarken (when a contestant is back on the board after getting a Whammy)
"You have three Whammies $0 and you don't have any spins left. So the game is not over yet. So you're not out of the game yet" - Peter Tomarken
"You have two Whammies and (x) spins. You want to be careful about picking up a third Whammy in Round 1/for Round 2. (What's your pleasure?) Press Your Luck or Pass?" - Peter Tomarken (if a contestant has two Whammies in Round 1)
"You have two Whammies. As a reminder, four Whammies, you're out of the game altogether. We're only in Round 1". - Elizabeth Banks (to a player that has 2 whammies in Round 1, ABC revival)
"You have three Whammies. $0 and (X) spins left. You want to be very careful because one more Whammy…
- …and you'll be gone/history/out of the game. We don't want that." - Host (if a contestant has three Whammies).
- …not only you'll be out of the game…
- (Insert contestant) will win the game.
- (Insert contestant) would have to play against the house. [Then he/she would be the only one in the game.] - Host (if a contestant has three whammies while a contestant that had four whammies has already whammied out and it's possible for another contestant to whammied out)
- Host (if a contestant has three whammies while a contestant with the highest amount is about to win the game).
"(insert third place contestant score), (insert second place contestant score), and (insert first place contestant score), you have first place and the advantage. And we're coming right back after these words for a whole new round, don't go away". - Peter Tomarken (at the start of the commercial break after the First Big Board Round)
"Sorry, (insert contestant), [four whammies]. You're out of the game". - Peter Tomarken (if a contestant whammies out)
"Sorry, (insert contestant), [four whammies]. You're also out of the game". - Peter Tomarken (if another contestant whammies out, leaving only one contestant left in the game)
"Now (insert contestant), here's the deal. Because (insert contestant) and (insert contestant) have both whammied out, you are the only one in the game. That means you are playing against the house. You got (x) spins. So you can take as many spins as you want. You don't have to go all the way because you can stop at anytime you want. But if you get four whammies, you would be gone/history/out of the game as well." - Peter Tomarken (explains when two contestants had already whammied out).
"(contestant), I'm so sorry, that's your fourth Whammy, which means the game is over for you tonight/(contestant), you know what that means, I'm sorry, the game is over for you tonight". - Elizabeth Banks (if a contestant whammies out, ABC revival)
"(insert Home Player), grab something lucky, because whatever (insert contestant) wins, you'll also win. But, if (insert contestant) hits a Whammy, he'll/she'll lose all his/her money (and he/she will also be out of the game (upon a 4th Whammy)), but you'll receive $500 courtesy of the Whammy. (insert name) is/you're the champion for today with (insert winning total)! You did it! We'll be right back to find out exactly what you've won, right after these words." - Peter Tomarken (to the winning contestant)
"(insert main game player here) IS OUR WINNER! (the main game winner) has won cash and prizes totaling (main game total)! That is yours to keep no matter what, and you are moving on to our bonus game, for a shot at $1 million! Sadly, we have to say goodbye to (the 2 losing contestants). Thank you so much for being here tonight. Come on back for the Press Your Luck bonus game, where (the main game winner) is/will be playing for cash and prizes of up to $1 million. Don't go anywhere!" - Elizabeth Banks (before cutting to commercial to get ready for the bonus game, ABC revival)
Bonus Game[]
"Welcome back to Press Your Luck. So far tonight, (the main game winner) has won cash and prizes totaling/equaling (main game total), including (prizes won). That is all yours to keep no matter what else happens the rest of the night, but now, you are going to face off against the big board and the Whammy, too/it's just you vs. the Big Board, and you could go home tonight a millionaire." - Elizabeth Banks (introducing the bonus round, and how the main game winner has done so far.)
"Here's how the bonus game works. You are going to face off against the Whammy over five/six (in season 1 only) rounds. At the end of each round, you can take whatever money and prizes you have and you can just walk away, or press your luck and play on. The longer you stay in the game, the bigger the money gets on the board, and if you make it to the final round, our Big Bucks Bonanza, one spin could be worth $100,000. But there are still Whammies out there, and if you hit one, he takes away all your cash, all your prizes, and sends the bank right back down to zero. Four Whammies and you're out of the game altogether. Now, if your bank in the/this bonus game ever reaches $500,000, the game is over, because you're going home a millionaire/we automatically bump your total winnings to $1 million!" - Elizabeth Banks (bonus game rule explanation, revival)
"Alright, in this first round, the Big Bucks on the board are worth $10,000. But there's always more than just cash on our board. We at Press Your Luck always love to add some special prizes, picked out just for you. Let's see the first one." - Elizabeth Banks (talking about round 1 and the personalized prizes on the board)
"Let's put that prize up on the board." - Elizabeth Banks (when a personal prize goes up on the board in the bonus game)
"How about we put another prize up there? Take a look at this!" - Elizabeth Banks (when adding a second personal prize to the board in round 1)
"You are starting this first round off with 5 spins. You must/have to/need to take all of your spins. Start building that bank!" - Elizabeth Banks (before the player takes their first round bonus spins)
"In this round, you have to take 4 spins. Good luck!" - Elizabeth Banks (before the player takes their second round bonus spins)
"You only have to take 3 spins. Let's do it!" - Elizabeth Banks (before the player takes their 3rd, 4th, 5th, or final round bonus spins)
"I'm so glad you decided to stay and play, because it means I get to add another prize to the board. Let's see what it is!" - Elizabeth Banks (if the player decides to go to the next round)
"If you want, you can just walk away right now, or you can stay and press your luck in round (insert round number here), where the Big Bucks are gonna jump up/double up (only in round 3, or round 4 in season 1) to (new Big Bucks value). What do you want to do?" - Elizabeth Banks (telling the player if they want to walk away or play on)
"If you want, you can just walk away right now, or you can stay and press your luck in round 4, where the Big Bucks are gonna jump up to $75,000. Now, before you make your decision, I want to show you the last personalized prize you'd be playing for if you choose to press your luck. Show him/her what it is! (after the final personal prize is revealed) So, what do you want to do? Stay and play, or walk away?" - Elizabeth Banks (showcasing round 4 and the final personal prize being revealed, and telling the player if they want to walk away or play on)
"If you want, you can just walk away right now. or you can stay and press your luck one final time, in round 5 (6 in season 1 only), where the Big Bucks are gonna jump up to a life-changing $100,000. And, we're bringing back the Big Bucks from all the previous rounds, because this is... the BIG BUCKS BONANZA! Every cash square on the board is Big Bucks. $10,000... $15,000 (only in season 1)... $25,000... $50,000... $75,000... and the biggest bucks of all/the ultimate big bucks, $100,000!" And let's not forget, if your bank reaches $500,000, we send you home a millionaire! So, it's up to you. Do you want to walk away, or stay and press your luck?" - Elizabeth Banks (talking about the final round, the Big Bucks Bonanza)
"I'd like to call your attention to a new space on the board this season. It's the Prize-A-Palooza! That's right, it's a game changer. Because if you land on it, you win every prize visible on the board at the time you stop it." - Elizabeth Banks (talking about the Prize-A-Palooza space, introduced in season 4)
"(contestant), I'm so sorry, that's your fourth Whammy, which means the game is over for you tonight/that was your final spin, and the Whammy got the best of you. But the good news is, you are still going home a big winner!" - Elizabeth Banks (if a contestant Whammies out of the bonus game, or finishes with $0 in the bonus game, ABC revival)
"I am so, so sorry... you are a Press Your Luck legend, because you are literally the only player who's ever left the game with no money." - Elizabeth Banks (said to Mathew, when he hit a Whammy on the final spin of the Big Bucks Bonanza, and won absolutely nothing, in the bonus game and the main game)
