"A fortune in cash can be won today on SAFECRACKERS! This week starring: James Darren, McLean Stevenson, Elaine Joyce. And now, the man who knows all the combinations, GEOFF EDWARDS!"
Safecrackers (not to be confused with the popularly active rotating pricing game from The Price is Right of the same name) was an unsold game show pilot that combined word puzzles with a big old safe.
Gameplay[]
Main Game[]
Two teams (consisting of one celebrity & one contestant) (one colored blue and the other colored gold) competed along with an outside celebrity, in this case McLean Stevenson. To start the game, each team is given a secret word, which is revealed to everybody but their opponents. Stevenson is given a secret word of his own, which is the common bond word for both words and it serves as the "Secret Identity" of the outside celebrity.
The teams in turn ask the celebrity yes-or-no questions, in an attempt to guess what the secret identity is. After every four questions, the celebrity reads a toss-up clue to the identity. The first player to buzz-in gets to make a guess. An incorrect guess exposes the team's secret word to their opposing team. The first team to solve the mystery of the secret identity or have the opposing team make two mistakes wins the game & $100. The first team to win two out of three games wins the match, a total of $200 and a chance to crack the safe for $25,000 in cash.
Bonus Round[]
In this bonus round, which only the winning contestant can play, (s)he faces a giant safe with ten numbers and must figure out the right combination to open it.
Edwards asks five general knowledge questions, each with a numerical answer. On each question, the winning contestant turn the dial to what (s)he thinks is the right number.
After all five questions are asked, the winning contestant will then pull a lever next to the door to try and open the safe. Each correct answer is worth $100 each. But if the contestant answer all five questions correct, the contestant will have the combination to the safe, the safe will open and the contestant wins the $25,000.
Trivia[]
- This may have served as the unofficial inspiration for the game show Person, Place or Thing with Melissa Peterman.
