The Returning Champion now made his or her entrance the first thing every episode as opposed to after the challengers were introduced, the contestants' oddly-shaped nametags were changed to full rectangular shapes, the pink red-star tiles (the numbers were on the other side) for putting in the slots and prompting the scanners to read the letters were replaced with blue star tiles on both sides, and for the contestant plugs, the game explanation part was dropped. On Wednesday, the pot gameplay element was dropped. The Crossword Round was now played for $500, and the Scrabble Sprint Round was now played for three times that amount for $1,500. On Thursday, Harvey came from North Africa.

The normal cue for correctly guessing a word was now played, and after doing so, a sound effect was no longer used when the 1-2-3 display was updated. Before the title sequence on Tuesday, a special introduction was used for Annie, complete with a drumroll. Throughout the July 1984–September 1986 duration of the straddling format, this introduction was typically used every time a player was about to go for either the 5th or 10th win. Woolery introduced a new NBC station carrying the show in KEVN-TV of Rapid City, South Dakota.

On Tuesday, the backwall behind the contestants had "COLLEGE" and "WEEK" in blue and pink pennants respectively. These would be gone soon after.
