Supermarket Stakeout is a reality competition series where blind luck, negotiation and cooking skills are the key ingredients to success.

Premise[]

Each one-hour episode consists of three rounds and takes place in a pop-up kitchen outside a supermarket. At the outset, Guarnaschelli gives the four chef contestants $500 apiece -- their whole budget to buy ingredients for the three-round cooking competition. They have free access to a pantry containing a limited stock of additional ingredients. Before each round, Guarnaschelli assigns a general theme that the chefs must follow with their cooking.

In round one, the chefs can purchase ingredients only by blindly ambushing customers outside the store and negotiating for their grocery bags without knowing the contents. In round two, competitors can only purchase groceries from a single shopper, but may look through the bags before negotiating the price. In the third and final round, competitors may purchase only five ingredients in total, but can approach as many shoppers they wish, look through the bags, and offer to buy individual items. During the final minutes of this round, they may enter the market and purchase one ingredient of their choice from the shelves.

Each round has a time limit of 45 minutes, during which the chefs must prepare, cook, and plate three servings of their chosen dish. A two-judge panel evaluates the dishes on taste, presentation, and adherence to the theme of the round, and the chef with the least satisfactory dish is eliminated and must forfeit their remaining money. The last chef standing after three rounds has their cash total increased to $10,000.
