“This is Jim and Alice Levinson, Steve and Sheryl Nobel, Jeff and Pam Beck. Our couples are now moving to the starting line. There are over $15,000 in prizes standing by, ready to be won. The question is, which one of our couples will carry their winnings over the finish line today on, The Couples Race? And now, here’s your host, Mike Darow!”
The Couples Race was an unsold game show pilot.
Gameplay[]
Three married couples who sat in cars competed for prizes.
Round 1: Prize Exchange[]
This was a question round where all questions were toss-ups. They can be free-for-alls or for members of the same sex. It was also where correct answers added prizes to a couple's prize bank.
To start, a toss-up question was asked and the first player to buzz-in with a correct answer won a prize. Then for future questions, correct answers awarded the decision to either win a new prize or take a prize away from another couple, giving that prize to that couple.
Round 2: The Couples Race[]
This is where the show gets its name.
To start, each couple decided who would be the driver (the one answering the toss-ups) and who would be the passenger (the one answering the bonus questions). A toss-up question would be asked and the first driver to buzz-in with the correct answer moved down their track one space and gave the spouse a chance to answer a bonus question related to the first one for either an additional space or to steal a prize from an opposing couple.
Along the way, answering the bonus question correctly would (if they want it) earn a choice of three car tags which could be worth a brand new car.
Once a couple moved five spaces, the players on that team alone switched roles. And when time ran short, a one minute speed round commenced, but without any prize steals.
The first couple to move ten spaces and cross the finish line or the couple who went the farthest when time was called won the game and all the prizes in their bank.
