The Floor is an adaptation of the Dutch format of the same name that is dubbed, "a spectacular battle of the brains" in which 81 contestants stand on 81 squares on a massive floor consisting of a 9x9 grid, competing for the top prize of $250,000. The series is hosted by Rob Lowe and premiered on January 2nd, 2024, on Fox. On September 25th, 2024, a second season ran for twelve (12) episodes until December 18th, 2024 with 100 contestants on 100 squares on a massive floor consisting of a 10x10 grid. On February 9th 2025, a third season of this show premiered on FOX, after the Super Bowl LIX with the same number of squares from the second season.
Premise[]
There are a 100 contestants (81 in the first season) standing on the floor starting with one (1) piece of territory which represents their specialty subject. Each subject will represent the types of items pairs of players battle with in the duels.
To start, a computer called the Randomizer is turned on, and will shine a light on someone's square. If they get hit, it means they have dueled in the upcoming battle. The selected player will be asked to challenge a player next to them in the subject they have. To help them make a decision, all the neighboring categories to the selected player will be shown. Once the player locks in with a category, both players come up to the podium in front of the set to prepare for the duel.
Each duel is played as a back-and-forth lightning round battle. In each challenge, both players have clocks starting at 45 seconds (0:45); a picture or sound is displayed, and each player must guess what the item is referring to. A correct answer stops the player's clock and starts their opponent's clock. Multiple guesses are allowed without penalty, however, if a player is stuck, they can pass on the item and get a new picture, but they will be frozen for three (3) seconds. If any clock hits zero (0:00) during a battle, the duel is over, and the contestant who ran out of time will be dropped from the game. The winner then captures the square, as well as its subject. After which, the player has the option to challenge another player or return to the Floor. Events in which a winner returns to the Floor are subject to another use of the Randomizer, which will only select players who have never dueled before. During the second and third seasons, a player who completes three (3) battles in a row, without fail, will also win five (5) extra seconds which can be used in any one duel they may play from that point forward being called the Time Boost.
In the last challenge of every episode, the preceding challenge's winner selects either their subject or their opponent's. At the end of every episode, the player with the most captured squares wins $20,000, which will be theirs to keep regardless of the outcome. In the event of a tie, the money is split between the players tied for the largest territory.
In the finale, the player with the biggest piece of the Floor selects their opponent for the first challenge of the night, and the last one standing wins an additional $250,000. For the second season, the last battle is played as a best-of-three game, with the $250,000 winner being the contestant who wins the most battles.
