The Hurdler was a character from the long-retired pricing game Hurdles, which in turn is from the long-running game show The Price is Right.
Background[]
The Hurdler (or The Runner) is usually wearing a green and yellow-striped shirt with a big black "TPIR" font on it, matching shorts and running shoes as he sticks his tongue out on left side of his face in a cartoon-like fashion. as a pistol was fired into the air, the hurdler starts running across the game board to the tune of William Tell Overture. At each pair of grocery items, the hurdle representing the chosen item would rise into the path of the hurdler. If the correct item were chosen, it would stop below his path and reveal the price; However, if not, it would block him, causing the hurdler to crash. If the hurdler cleared all three hurdles, then the contestant won the prize.
When the game was lost, a crashing sound was heard, also used in Cliff Hangers prior to 1986. in addition, the screen would shake and the words "CRASH!" or "OOPS!" (similar to the interjective balloons in the original 1966 Adam West Batman TV Series) was displayed.
Later History[]
Since his retirement after 28 years, The Hurdler returned to The Price is Right Decades video game that was available on: Wii, Xbox 360, PS3 via PSN, IOS and Android devices from 2011 until 2012.
Trivia[]
- While playing frequently throughout its time on the show, Hurdles was prone to mechanical failure. Often, the Hurdle components were not in sync with the runner and they sometimes fail to work at all as these constant breakdowns led to the character's (and the game's) demise in 1983.
